In March, 1892, the publishing house of Cesar Schmidt in
Ziirich issued a pamphlet written by Baron Alexander von Artin,
and entitled : “ Kaspar Hauser, Des Rithsels Losung.”
This work is made up for the most part from earlier authorities,
especially from the book published in 1883, entitled : ‘Kaspar
Hauser, Seine Lebensgeschichte und der. Nachweis seiner fiirst-
lichen Herkunft, Aus nunmehr zur Veroffentlichung bestimmten
Papieren einer hohen Person.” Von K——, Regensburg, 1883.
But it contains what no previous work possessed, namely, a fac-
simile letter from Grand-Duke Ludwig, which is conclusive proof
of his guilt, and to this convincing testimony is subjoined the
death-bed confession of ex-Minister Von Berstett to a certain
Prince, whose name is not mentioned, and to whom Ludwig’s
letter was confided under the promise that it should not be pub-
lished until fifty-five years after Von Berstett’s death. This
period of time having now elapsed, the letter has just been
delivered by the son of the Prince to the author of the pamphlet
expressly for publication.
The letter is as follows :
“ An meine Regierung,—
“In Nirnberg vorigen Monat alles missgliickt. Treffen sie
Massnahmen dass aus diesem Anlass die Ruhe meines Gross-
herzogthums ungestort bleibt. Empfangen sie dagegen die
Versicherung meines immerwihrenden Antheils au Ihrem
Wohlergehen. Ich verbleibe stets Ihr wohlaffektionirter,
