book was finished. He was three months writing it, without 
counting the previous work of preparation. 
What Feuerbach deplored was that he could no longer reason 
from facts as clearly as formerly, and therefore his book was not 
carried out so far as he intended. As a narrator he felt as strong 
as ever, and facts were what was wanted in this matter. The very 
letter in which he makes this complaint is composed in as clear 
and concise a style as the healthiest thinker could employ. 
He directs also that his book on Kaspar Hauser be given to 
his son’s fatherly friend, the worthy Senter. If he had considered 
the work a failure, or incorrect in its statements, he would not 
have bequeathed it to one of the most revered of his friends, 
Daumer’s book contains most of the information found in 
other writings upon this strange mystery, and the fact that he 
collected and repeated the statements forty years after Kaspar 
Hauser’s death, is a proof that he considered the case established 
and proven. 
Professor Daumer spent the last years of his life in Frankfort, 
and died there in 1875. 
His mother died many years earlier; his sister, as Widow 
Valentin. was living at Frankfort as late as 1883. 
In 1874 the Director of the Library and Archives of Nurem- 
berg, Johann Paul Priem, published a history of the city, wherein 
the story of Kaspar Hauser is given due space. 
In 1875 Dr. Wilhelm Martens of Danzig published a lecture 
which he had delivered upon Kaspar Hauser. It contained un- 
reserved accusations against the house of Baden, and expressed 
the writer's firm belief in the identity of the foundling with the 
elder son of Grand-Duke Karl. Articles appeared also in the 
Augsburg Allgemeine Zeitung and in the Vossische Zeitung of 
Berlin. 
In 1876 appeared a book entitled, « Kaspar Hauser und sein 
Badisches Prinzenthum,” by Dr. Otto Mittelstadt of Heidelberg. 
It is a violent denial of the identity of Kaspar Hauser with the
