Kaspar Hauser.
21
This letter enclosed a note written in Latin characters, ap-
parently left by the mother of the child in 1812, but probably
coming from the same source as the letter, both being forgeries.
The note read as follows :—
“The child has already been baptised. His name is Kaspar.
You must give him a surname, and take care of him. His
father was a cavalry soldier. When he is seventeen years old,
you must send him to Nuremberg, to the Sixth Cavalry Regi-
ment ; his father used to belong to it. I beg you to keep him
till he is seventeen years old. He was born April 30, 1812. 1
am a poor girl, and cannot take care of my child. His father
is dead.”

This note was written upon the same kind of paper, and with
the same ink as the letter. The handwriting also is similar,
although the letter is in German and the note in Latin characters.
If the note had really been written seventeen years before, the ink
would have been faded. Another mistake was the mention of
he Sixth Cavalry Regiment; for that regiment had not been
long in Nuremberg, and of course nobody could have foreseen
that it would be sent thither in 1828.
The dates given in these papers were no doubt purposely
changed, as to give the exact figures would have made the coin-
cidence too evident. The Hereditary Prince of Baden was born
September 29, 1812, instead of April 30; but his younger brother
was born April 30, 1816. Again, the writer says that the infant
was left at his door October 7, 1812.
The Prince was abducted October 16, 1812. It would seem
that the writer of those letters did not wish to give the exact
dates, for fear of premature discovery; while he purposely kept
near the right figures, so that in case of recognition the clue
might easily be followed.
To judge from his looks, Kaspar Hauser must have been of an
age corresponding to the date given in the letter. He was four
feet nine inches in height, broad shouldered, and well formed; a
