The physicians had a good excuse for refusing to allow the 
Grand-Duchess to see the dead body, as she had not yet 
recovered from the perils of child-birth, and her nerves were still 
very weak. 
The disappointment of the Grand-Duke and Duchess at the 
loss of their heir was profound; but after a few months their 
hopes were revived by the prospect of again becoming parents. 
In due time, October 21, 1813, the child was born, but it was a 
daughter instead of a son. She was healthy, as the other two 
infants had been, and was allowed to live unharmed. This 
Princess afterwards married Karl, the hereditary Prince of 
Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. 
The conspirators began to hope that their plans would succeed. 
The Grand-Duke was systematically led into every excess which 
could ruin his health and shorten his days; and when, in 1815, he 
was obliged to attend the congress of crowned heads in Vienna, 
an attempt was made to poison him there. The result was a 
lingering illness, ending in death, although he recovered from the 
first violence of the attack and lived three years longer, having 
been, as he and his wife believed, poisoned again after his return 
home. 
His valet, who was supposed to have administered the poison 
in Vienna, committed suicide a few days after the attempt, and 
his other confidential attendant, Major Hennenhofer (the same 
who had carried off the Crown Prince), maintained a discreet 
silence upon the subject. 
In December of the same year the Duchess was again 
announced to be with child, and on April 30, 1816, she was 
safely delivered of a healthy son. Warned by the mysterious fate 
of the first male offspring, this infant was watched with jealous 
care, and there seemed to be no opportunity for foul play; but 
one day when the Prince was a little more than a year old, it was 
proposed, as though in sport, to weigh him, and while the atten- 
dants were busy with that performance, one of the everready 
creatures of the conspirators, a certain Herr von Ende, contrived 
to mix a ‘“ white powder” in the infant's cup of broth. The child
