Kastar Hauser
guardian, Herr von Tucher, no longer regarded him with
affection ; he was treated as a stranger in the house. He had
never been told of the five hundred guldens which Lord Stan-
hope had given towards his support, and Herr von Tucher had
decided to have him learn the bookbinder’s trade, which he him-
self did not wish to learn. Finally, he requested to be given up
to Lord Stanhope as his adopted son, and asked permission to
stay with Mayor Binder until the matter should be decided.
Lord Stanhope also petitioned for Kaspar’s removal to the
house of Mayor Binder, as circumstances had arisen which
rendered further dealings with Herr von Tucher impossible.
Herr von Tucher replied by saying that the “circumstances ”
consisted in the fact that he had been obliged to write to Lord
Stanhope, begging him to change his conduct towards Kaspar
Hauser, as his manner of confiding in and flattering the youth
was spoiling him for regular training. The letters were shown to
the court, displaying Von Tucher’s noble character in the strongest
ight.
Herr von Tucher requested the court to discharge him from
‘he duties of guardian, as, after what had passed, Kaspar Hauser,
ready made his enemy, would be more bitter than ever, and no
one could undertake the care of him with success unless he were
antirely removed from Stanhope’s influence. He himself could
not keep him in his house, as his mother would not consent to
nave him in the family any longer.
November 26, 1831, the citygovernment agreed to give up Kaspar
Hauser if Lord Stanhope would bind himself to provide a suitable
2ducationr and a sufficient support for his protégé. This was done
November 29, 1831, and December 2, 1831, the papers were
nade out which transferred Kaspar Hauser to Lord Stanhope’s care,
he city of Nuremberg still retaining the right of guardianship,
ind the office of guardian being transferred from Herr von
Tucher to Mayor Binder. Herr von Tucher was released from
his duties December 47, 1831, but Mayor Binder did not assume
authority until November 26, 1833.
